Retirement and Death
At the age of 81, Winston Churchill retired as prime minister, four years after he had just been elected, and instead took a position on the Parliament. He was fighting depression around this time, and began to lose his mental and physical faculties. There were also rumors that Churchill had Alzheimer’s disease in his later years, but these were proven not a true due to a series of stroke he had endured. Winston was made a knight of the Order of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth, in 1953, and soon made an Honorary Citizen of the U.S by John F. Kennedy in 1963. Unfortunately, due to Winston’s health at the time, he could not attend the White House ceremony. He then retired from Parliament in 1964.
On January 15, 1965, Churchill suffered a major stroke that had him severely ill, and he passed away on Sunday 24th in his London home. He was 90 years old when he died, and he also died 70 years on the exact day of his father’s death.
At this time, Winston’s funeral was the largest state funeral that the world had ever seen. Other countries except Ireland had broadcasted the service live, and representatives of 112 nations except China sent an emissary. The Royal Artillery had fired the 19-Gun salute and also did the RAF staged by 16 English Electric Lightning fighters. Winston Churchill was later buried in his family plot at St. Martin’s Church near Woodstock. In 1965, a memorial to Churchill was made and placed in Westminster Abbey.
